Brella Cleared by the FDA for Armpit Sweating

In April 2023, the US FDA cleared Brella™ SweatControl Patch™ from San Francisco based Candesant Biomedical to treat excessive armpit sweating. Brella is a non-toxic, non-invasive, targeted alkali thermolysis (TAT) product that treats primary axillary hyperhidrosis. According to the company's CEO Niquette Hunt, the 3-minute Brella single-use disposable sweat patch treatment represents a significant advancement in the treatment of axilllary hyperhidrosis.

Brella will begin rolling out at the clinics of dermatologist and plastic surgeons in the summer of 2023. They will also have their own site at https://www.mybrella.com.

Pivotal Clinical SAHARA Study

The results of the pivotal SAHARA study showed that:

  1. 67% of TAT-treated subjects had a 2-point improvement in Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS) scores versus 0% of sham-treated subjects.
  2. 83% of TAT-treated subjects reported HDSS scores of 1 or 2 at Week-4 versus 0% of sham-treated subjects.

There were no serious adverse events reported at any time by any study participant.

Can Brella Treat Hand or Feet Sweating?

Interestingly, Candesant is also planning to test out Brella for hand and feet sweating via future trials. However, according to some doctors, it is likely that Brella will be used off-label for palmar and plantar hyperhidorosis as soon as it is on the market in the summer of 2023.

What is the Cost of Brella and is it Covered by Insurance?

At the time of writing this post, the cost of Brella is not clear. However, it is advertised as being very affordable, though you will need to see a physician and get the product applied via an in-office treatment. Check out Candesant's Instagram page for updates on pricing, discounts, sales offers and more.

Insurance does not cover this treatment since excessive armpit sweating treatment is not considered a medical necessity. Even when cosmetic conditions are covered, make sure to get pre-approval or prior authorization. Targeted Alkali Thermolysis (TAT) and Sodium

The new Brella SweatControl Patch is an affordable in-office treatment for sweat control that will be offered by dermatologists starting in the summer of 2023. It is fast, non-invasive, needle-free and aluminium-free. The results last for three to four months. The single-use dosposable patch consists of a sodium sheet with an adhesive. It is applied to a patient’s underarm by a health care provider for up to three minutes.

The Brella patch utilizes Candesant’s patented TAT (targeted alkali thermolysis) technology. It is based on the scientific principle that heat is generated when sodium comes into contact with the water found in sweat. The thermal energy that is in turn created by the sodium sheet is localized and causes micro-damage to the underarm sweat glands. In the process, sweat output from the armpits is significantly reduced.

Reviews

You will be able to find Brella reviews on a number of sites online once the product is released later in 2023. Make sure to check WebMD.com and Drugs.com as well as read doctor and clinic reviews on Google and Yelp.

Advantages over Antiperspirants

Unlike antiperspirants, Brella will not need to be applied on a daily basis. Just one application ever three to four months will be a big time saver. Moreover, this patch will not contain any harmful ingredients such as aluminium.
